VA Disability Combined Rating Calculator

Add your disabilities and calculate your combined VA rating with bilateral factor.

Your Disabilities

What is Bilateral Factor?

If you have disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, VA adds a bilateral factor. This calculator automatically applies the 10% bilateral factor when checked.

How VA Combined Ratings Work

The "Whole Person" Concept

VA uses a "whole person" theory. If you're 30% disabled, you're considered 70% able-bodied. Each additional disability is calculated from the remaining able-bodied percentage, not added directly.

Example Calculation

If you have:

The calculation is:

  1. Start with 30% (you're 70% able-bodied)
  2. Take 20% of the remaining 70% = 14%
  3. Add: 30% + 14% = 44%
  4. Round to nearest 10% = 40% combined rating

Bilateral Factor

When disabilities affect both sides of the body (both knees, both shoulders, etc.), VA adds a 10% bilateral factor. This is calculated before rounding.
